What Google and the Super Bowl have in Common

What Google and the Super Bowl have in Common

If you’re like me and almost every single person I know, you spent a few hours this Sunday sitting on your couch watching football…or at least, talking with a lot of people who were there for the purpose of watching Super Bowl 54 between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. It’s a day that unites sports fanatics and non-football fans alike and, as with most things in life, it inspired my own thoughts about marketing and search engine optimization.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that the Super Bowl and Search Engine Optimization actually have a lot in common. Confused? Don’t worry, I’ll explain…

1) There is stiff competition when it comes to getting to the top.
In the NFL there are only 16 teams, but that doesn’t make the competition any less fierce. In the world of online marketing, there are countless competitors of different types and sizes. Getting to the top of anything - including the first page of Google - is a tough fight…but it’s one worth having. Everyone knows the winner, and everyone sees the top search results. Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try - in fact, you probably need to double down on your efforts!

2) It’s easy to see who the top competitors are…but it’s harder to know exactly how to beat them.
Sure, you can run a quick Google search related to your industry and find out who’s on top. You can even scan their website and look at some of the things they’re doing (or not doing) to get to page 1. But at the end of the day, you can’t know for sure exactly what things will launch you higher than them…and so the focus has to be on yourself, your business, and your website to be the best it can be and trust that it will take you to the top.

3) The top teams aren’t necessarily the teams with the most money.
Big advertising budgets are beautiful, but they aren’t necessary to your Google success. When my website reached the first page of Google, I was spending exactly $0 in Google Adwords to make it to the top. If you know what to do and how to do it, money isn’t nearly as big of a deal as it seems.

4) ‘Winning’ only lasts for a moment, but the hard work continues forever.
The champions of Super Bowl 54 are on a high right now (as they should be!), but that will only last so long. Next season will begin, and if they want to reach the top they’ll have to put in just as much time and energy into their success as they did in 2019.

Although your SEO won’t start from ground zero every year, the concept is the same: you can’t ever just coast! You have to put in consistent time and effort - even if it’s just a few minutes at a time - to keep your rankings up and stay near the top.
